If you want to get to know DublinCity’s culture in a more digital form, this site invites you to watch CYCLOPS, a project created by Conor McGarrigle.
Cyclops is a period where there is an on going narrative series that signifies a portrait of a city more on the mediated daily stories of its inhabitants. Taking in live performances, video, photography and captured audio fused with digital framework as the project follows a journey of a character named Artie Doyle on a Joycean narrative where his travel is within the streets of Dublin city where it is fused with discrete episodes corresponding to chapters taken from Ulysses.
The view of the digital medium is similar to an anonymous security officer that is looking for the protagonist as he travels to Temple Bar area of Dublin city using the Cyclops surveillance control console. This view is broken into four scenes/aspect which entails to the, security zones, political life, and poetry of the urban and artistic life of Dublin.
In Joyce’s narrative is says that if ever DublinCity was destroyed and to be rebuild again, the basis of elements would be of these four zones. The experience makes the most mundane sceneries in Dublin city have its significance. Everything is enhanced as a city of grand gestures, declamatory statements and letting alone the inner life of the locals within the city, their hopes, desires and thoughts are apparent in the fabric and streetscapes of the city.
The digital scenes have its real look; the creation is obviously a digital creation. However, it is not clear whether the event that are in the creation are taken from real events or may be plain fictitious.
There are the 4 Zones of this digital art creation:
Zone 1: Sign of Times
There is an Arthouse building a building that is presently closed. Artie creates a vision of riot police breaking up anti war protests and cavalcades. It also shows roaring Euro ministers through closed off street. This scene signifies the Citizen’s political concerns and the rise of nationalism.
Zone 2: A conversation
In this scene, Artie meets an art critic named Clancy, where Artie and Clancy plan Artie’s first exhibition pertaining to typical conversation in between an artist and curator in Dublin.
Zone 3: Heroes of Irish Art
Artie had been overwhelmed with a number of Artist names in Ireland. Names making Artie a bit intimidated in thinking that those are the names that is hard to live up to. The list that are included here are Citizen’s list of Irish Heroes if antiquity.
Zone 4: Thoughts
The scene of Zone four would be surveillance cameras that views the street with the use of authentic surveillance footage. This scene transcended in a raw material of symbolic and poetic meditation on an overall life and energy of the city right before your very eyes.
