Ireland has a very unique climate which mainly tickles the fancy of travelers from all part of the world. Ireland is an island and the temperature of this Emerald Isle is moderated by the body of water surrounding it. Main characteristics of the Irish climate are that it is mild, moist and changeable. The temperature remains relatively moderate throughout the year, never getting too hot to or too cold. The climate in Ireland rains a lot, and it seldom snows. In fact, in the south west of Ireland there are areas which never see a frost.

Temperatures typically range between 40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit (4 to10 Celsius) in the winter months and 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit (16 to 21 Celsius) in the summer months. The peculiar climate and weather condition of Ireland has one famous saying which goes like “If you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes and it will change”. This was not true at all. Rainfall does not last long and comes as soft showers or a fine mist. They often produce absolutely spectacular rainbows which accentuates the spectacular scenery of the Emerald Isle.

Changeable Weather and the Beautiful Irish Environment

Ireland has a very unpredictable weather. From day to day, the weather is extremely changeable. As you travel around Ireland you’ll see many different microclimates, which are all a byproduct of the warm air coming off the Atlantic. Ireland has a diversified flora and fauna species ranging from rare exotic flowers and plants.

Summer and Winter Months in Ireland

The good news about Ireland is that the weather doesn’t change a whole heck of a lot from season to season; at least not as dramatically as it does in, say, Chicago, Germany or Moscow. During the summer months daylight can last well into the late evening, and the nights can be described more like twilight than darkness. Snow is a rare treat for the southwest, but will often occur in the late Winter months in the northeast. Ireland enjoys a reasonably mild climate, even in winter months. I’m not saying it is bathing suit weather, but you won’t be freezing.

Best Time to Travel in Ireland

Ireland is a perfect place to visit all year round but there are months which are specific months when traveling to Ireland is at its best.

  •      The month of April can offer the travelers the best with the Spring growth, attractions are open and fresh for the season and getting around is easier as kids are still in school and this is not family travel season.
  • Traditionally the first half of May has the best weather days of the season.
  • July and August is peak travel season for Ireland and it is highly recommended that you book your stay prior to arrival to avoid long lines at tourist offices or having to make numerous calls yourself once in Ireland. Dublin in particular is extremely busy in August as over half a million EU students come to Ireland to learn English for this specific month.
  • The last two weeks in June are the longest days of the year so sight seeing at night is ideal.
  •  October you will see the change in colors to Autumn colors, kids have gone back to school so traveling around is easier than in summer, and attractions are still open until the end of the month
