chieftains

A lot of people don’t know it but Irish Music has been very influential in a lot of genres. There are a lot of great Irish musicians out there and their music has a long lineage and a lot of history. For the most part, western music is basically new and have been created only in the last few decades. Irish music has been here for centuries and though they may have been tweaked a few times and in a few ways, few can say that the old traditional Irish music is gone. It still serves as the backbone of contemporary Irish music. I have been listening to a lot of them lately and whenever I do, I get this strange feeling that I’ve been listening to an old tune through new music. I do not mean that the song is plagiarized or stolen. It just reminds me of the earlier Irish music and it comforts me knowing that the old soul is still here living in new body.

It tells me that Irish Music lives on. So what is Irish Music? I have been talking about it for a long time and there is really no way to describe it. I guess it’s just like what they say- Music is meant to be listened not just talked about. If you want to find out more about Celtic Music, here are some albums you just need to listen to.

1)      The Chieftains Water from the Well- You probably heard of the Chieftains if you have any inclination towards music. The Chieftains are a very popular group not only in their home country but also across the ocean. The Chieftains has relied on guest appearances of other popular artists on their albums and this has been their staple since 1988’s hugely popular, Irish Heartbeat. They do not only rely on local artists but they get artists from other genres as well such as country music, R&B and pop. This makes the album seem like a Greatest Hits collection and for the most part, The Chieftains’ albums usually are. Water from the Well is no different.

The Chieftains has been credited for the immense popularity of Irish music and they do so through their utter devotion to their craft. This 2000 album is a perfect example of their artistry and is timely as well since it comes at the end of the century whose music scene they helped shape.

Water from the Well combines a lot of the popular artists of different genres.. At the same time, the Irish roots of the music are never gone and always prominent. As far as “Greatest Hits” is involved, Water from the Well just may be the Greatest of the Greatest Hits.

2) Lunasa- Redwood We’ll mix this list up a bit so that you won’t get bored while reading it. As I have said, great artists in Irish music history are of different genres, mixing the old with the new yet the spirit remains. Lunasa is what one would call a boyband. They however transcend the common notion of boybands and excels in what they do. Their songs are catchy yet at the same have deep undertones as well.
